The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to reigning world champions Spain in their second Group C match at the 2024 Olympics Women’s Football Tournament on Sunday.
The loss leaves the African giants on the precipice of elimination.
Coach Randy Waldrum made tactical changes to the starting lineup, but it was Spain who dominated possession throughout the match.
Despite the pressure, the Super Falcons defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie pulling off several crucial saves.
However, a stunning free-kick from Alexia Putellas in the 85th minute broke the Nigerian resistance, leaving the team with a mountain to climb in their final group game against Japan.
